The Hangover
As you can imagine, the rest of the weekend was not as productive as I had hoped. I really am an old lady inside, and late night shenanigans just don’t suit me very well. Therefore Saturday morning’s recovery breakfast involved pancakes and eggs. That’s the thing about hangovers…you never crave carrots and hummus afterward. It’s always carbs and grease.
Hangover breakfast...except add another egg and a banana.
Lunch was also…well, carby. Trust me, this was not the damage I wanted to do. This was restrained.
Barney Butter Banana Sandwich
BBBS with yogurt and pumpkin butter
I did manage a nice dinner. Though all I wanted was pizza, I talked myself out of it and instead made Mama Pea’s quinoa crust. It’s not takeout. It’s fakeout.
Mine didn’t turn out too crusty, unfortunately, but it was still very good. I topped it with some organic marinara, sautéed zucchini, onions, and bell peppers, with a little feta cheese crumbled on top. And some broccoli to garnish
The next morning, Matthew and I drew the curtains, lit some candles, and prepared for…
What else would I be talking about?!
Quickly followed by a pair of green smoothies…for one
Spinach, frozen banana, blueberry, soymilk, and vanilla protein smoothie
But these good deeds were quickly diminished by a group outing with friends for dim sum.
For those of you who are not familiar with dim sum, I always describe it as Chinese Tapas. Having grown up eating dim sum quite regularly, it is definitely comfort food for me.
Since I now limit dim sum to about once a year nowadays, I have a non-rule: I never keep track of how much of it I am eating!
However, I do know the things I just had one of: (Forgive me for not knowing all the proper Chinese names. We developed our own names for these as kids.)
Fried "potato" thing--I think they are taro croquettes?
I had never tried this before, but it was pork in a pastry. Amazing.
Pork Shu-Mai
Chicken Spring Rolls
And now we are getting into the “more than one” category:
Steamed Pork Baus
My absolute favorte: Shrimp Har Gau (shrimp in steamed noodle)
Since there were six of us, there was A LOT of food. I only took pictures of the things that I ate. The har gau’s were the bulk of what I ate. If I was lucky, I could maybe count the number I had on both hands. But we’ll never know. Because I lost don’t count.
By the end of it, I just wanted to doze off like Elliot:
Or perhaps buy this odd drink that I saw in the Asian market beneath the restaurant.
Instead, once home, we went for a long, long walk. It was a lovely Fall day!
I did eat dinner but kept it very light, just some sautéed zucchini and marinara sauce.
I hope everyone else had as lovely of a weekend as I did!
What are your hangover cures? I always crave fried eggs!

haha TOTALLY worth the hangover
when I was in college my roomie used to take Dramamine to cure hangovers. She said it worked like a charm!
mmm I’ve never had dim sum before but I really do now! Love your non rule. It’s COMPLETELY worth it!
Good job on resisting the temptation to stuff your face (excuse my language). I haven’t been REALLY hungover since probably college. In those cases I just can’t eat, can’t really stand the smell of anything – everything just irritates me. When I’m just “off” I definitely crave heavy foods. Pizza would definitely be on that list, and I think if I fought the urge to go out for some (or order in), I’d just make my own with real dough. Yours is so much healthier! Good job on getting back on track like that.
Dim sum is soooooooo good. I’m a little obsessed ever since our Hong Kong trip. My favorite are those shrimp dumplings you ate “more than one” of. I do too.. and I don’t count
Love your yoga space!
For some reason my hangover food is always toast with butter. Or french toast. Some sort of toast!!
I’ve never had a lot of those foods that you took pics of but they look delish!
I probably would have went with the pizza Sat night hehe
Grease and carbs is my cure too…with protein in there somewhere. Ugh. Hangovers are the worst and they just keep getting worse as you get older.
Trust me.
I’ve never had dim sum (or any other kind of tapas) but everything pictured looks really good! Those steamed buns look really doughy, are they? If so I may have to hunt down some!
Pork in a pastry?! OH my! I always crave junk..like pancakes or something.
My pants are *always* too short! It stinks. Hangover cure? I drink about a gallon of water before I go to bed and I’ve never had a hangover, except for once when I didn’t do that. My cure works for at least 10 drinks in a night.
Haha Lara, I’m an old lady inside too, I think that’s why I like you so much!
Fried eggs on toast or bagels is my hangover food. It’s gotta be eggs + carbs for me. Although one time I had nothing but red pepper hummus and rolls after a particularly bad night and it was amazing
My pants are always too short too! Another reason why I always wear flats…
I bummed your crust didn’t crisp! Mine got a little too crunchy. Thankfully, I haven’t been hungover in a long while, but when I am, I definitely crave the carbs to soak up the alcohol!
I too can relate to the short pants. I buy longs when I can find them. I have a pair of Banana Republic LONG jeans on today that I had to get hemmed they were so long…LOVE IT!
I think it was a fault with my flax…I used a goji berry/flax mix. I’ll try again next time with just regular flax! It was very good still! Thanks for the recipe
Jeans aren’t as bad as just pants (for workouts or for work). I’m loving the longer jeans trend lately!
I crave loads of carbs the day after a night out, you took care of the situation well
Long walks during the fall season are my favorite.. I squeeze one in about every day. xoxo
LOL! Yes, why do we always want carbs and grease, not carrots and hummus??!
That dim sum looks so amazing! I would have eaten more than you for sure! Glad you got to enjoy yourself
No, your pants are not too short! You crack me up – you look fabulous as always!
I feel you on the short pants. I’ve actually never had dim sum but I totally get the tapas reference. I love the concept, I may have to investigate and see if there is a good place near me.
I always crave tons of water, fruit and carbs after a night out. Carbs specifically. I can never do the “hair of the dog” thing – just thinking of alcohol makes me want to die when I’m hungover but my husband swears by it.
Love the BBBS – I miss my Barney Butter.
Time for another order from Amazon!
The annoying thing with hangovers is I never feel full or satisfied!!!
I usually try to eat a mass of fruit and giant salads to pump back some vitamins into my body, I make a killer tuna salad that seems to help.
Your dim sum looks fantastic. I once almost ordered the chicken feet by mistake, yikes.
I suppose it would be eggs & toast- comforting food. LOVE the alcohol doctor drink! Hilarious!
Please don’t cut dim sum to once a year- my aunt Rhoda (who’s so good with her diet) always eats about 20 of those shrimp ones but as an atkins lover she kicks off the rice noodle outside. I usually split the difference and I LOVE LOVE LOVE dim suM!
If your pants are short then that’s a compliment- you’re long and lean!!
short pants might beat never being able to buy any pants because theyre too long! i hate pants/jeans shopping.
you and your hubby+yoga+smoothies= so cute!
haha i’m glad you recovered- somewhat!! Can u believe I’ve never had dim sum- there’s a chinatown right by me, in both LA and here in boston, so i have to go!! It sounds riiight up my alley
My hubby fully beleives that the ultimate way to cure a hangover is to start your day off with a beer. Ugh, I can’t imagine, but he is Russian and has vodka in his blood I am convinced! They are probably immune to any kind of hard alcoholic aftermaths. LoL
Funny how we ALWAYS crave carbs after a night of drinking. AND, don’t you awlays find that you are STARVING the morning after.
Glad you got to spend a a nice weekend to detox! But I am also glad it was a great night because it seems like everything was worth it.
carbs are always on the list after hangovers…i become a cracker feign! i think i’ve only had two official hangovers though…and i just guzzle water before bed to prevent them!
haha i like your self-controlled version of hangover food. you are correct; it is NEVER carrots and hummus. not gonna lie: i dipped PIZZA in hummus as hangover food this weekend…
your writing seems different. Not bad. Its still you, I like it. It just seems different!
hangover : a bottle of kombucha, peanut butter &banana &yogurt & agave.
aww you guys did yoga together!?!?
so cute…. kinda makes me wanna cry. ah well.
Funny – I never have had a hangover ever, which is amazing to me considering my college days…..
That chinese food looks so good!
Wow – your hangover food is fantastic – I’m like pizza on top of fries with a side of tater tots – eek!! That’s awesome that you guys do yoga together!!
I love how balanced you eat! The pancakes are rounded out with protein, as well as the pb & j with yogurt.. I love it!
That’s so cute you and your hunny do yoga together! I took Bryon to a yoga class with me once and he refuses to go back! LOL
You did well!
I want fried things too when I had a bit too much too drink. Your breakfast looks like the prefect cure to me!
mmm that chinese tapas looks so delicious! i dont think i’ve had most of those foods before but they definitely look indulge-worthy
I didn’t have much hangovers in my life, but I think that a lot of water and some carby stuff helps. Specially when I feel nauseous. I eat some salty bread, and that definitely helps me. I love how your breakfast looks like
I am just like you, an old lady inside! I was invited to a party on Saturday, which didn’t start until 10 pm. Nick and I both agreed no WAY! That’s when we are getting in our PJs and relaxing, not at the bar drinking. Oh well. I hear asparagus is a great hangover cure. I usually take some advil, drink plenty of water, and of course take a full multivitamin (I usually only take half).
I’m laughing right now imagining NICK doing yoga with me. Too funny. You’re lucky you’ve got someone who will do that with you! He’s a keeper.
Aw, Elliot is so cute
I’m rarely hangover because I don’t drink much but when I am I’m not really hungry! I just eat some toast, drink some tea or milk+coffee and I’m good to go… sleep. :p
hahaha, sorry girl I had to laugh! You are to cute. Greasy food does seem to be the cure for a hangover doesn’t it? Nothing like Waffle House at 4 am. I always crave a good AB and Banana sammie the day after also!
Sweet Sweet baby!
~Justine
I’ve only been to dim sum once but I’ve been wanting to get it again for SO long!! I just remember I always loved the steamed pork buns. Which is weird because I don’t even like pork that much. But there was a place in Seattle that I’d always walk by, right by the market, and they just looked so good. Yum! I love that you didn’t limit yourself since it’s only a once a year occasion
All your food looks delicious. I know the feeling, whenever I’ve indulged too much the night before all I can think about is pizza!!!!
That dim sum looks GREAT!
Good job getting back on the healthy wagon after a rough night too. I always want a bacon egg and cheese sandwich! Extra ketchup.
have you tried kefir? It’s a really good hangover cure… kefir.com/blog
I always take a B12 complex prior to drinking. If I do suffer a hangover the next morning, I will supplement with another B12 complex. I crave carbs when hungover (even more than normal), but I force myself to go for a huge plate of steamed or roasted vegetables first. Then, if I want a slice of pizza, I can eat it without *much* guilt. I’ve also found that going for a walk in the fresh air helps!
I’ll have to try the B12! Thanks!
The walk looks so pretty! Sadly, grease is my go to for hangovers – dangit!
I know I have pathetically fallen out of bloggie land, but I love the friendships I’ve made with you and some of the other bloggers so I’m going to do my best to drop in on occasion and wish you well. I loved your last post about the Haus – that was so awesome and it looked like you guys had a blast. Your new blog layout is great! Such pretty colors..
I’m wishing you and Matthew well!
xoxo
I don’t do alcohol so don’t have hangovers, BUT, if I eat too much junk then I feel awful. Then I just have to not eat for a while until I can eat something that is green and good for me instead of junky!
hahha that hangover juice is WAY too funny!! I’ve never seen it at my asian grocery store! Are we missing out here?!?!?
Ahhh the beloved har gau! My favorite dim sum of ALL TIME. yum!!! I also love the egg and pork congee. I think you did a fabulous job idenifying all the items! Those are definitely taro croquettes, and the bbq in pastry is actually just like BBQ pork buns, except they wrap it up in that flaky pastry dough like you said! That’s my daddy’s favorite. SO delicious when done correctly!!
Enjoy those last few months in English Lara!! Soon you’ll be back in sunny California!!
omg dim summmmmm! those taro things are one of my fav dishes! omg i want one in my belly nowwww!
i need to go to dim sum soon. gotta convince the parentals! lol. love ya girl
OOH dim sum.. how fun!! I really enjoy your hangover breakfast! Im totally an old lady inside, too. We were out on Halloween til midnight and I was like OMG this is soo late. lol
Dim Sum deliciousness. I agree that the hangover breakfast always seems to include carbs and grease. Oh well, I guess you just have to do what your body needs.
you said it sister – carbs + grease it is for me too! ya gotta sop up all the alcohol with something
i LOVE dim sum. in thailand, there was this dim sum restaurant super close so we would go there all the time. and its so dangerous, because you cannot keep track of how much you eat, and everything comes in smaller portions so you keep on ordering!
love that gorgeous picture of your walk
I think it looks like a great weekend! at least I’m not the only one who has short pants
I always want eggs, too!
I’ve never had dim sum…I guess I should. Everything looks awesome.
It would be nice if we craved healthy foods after a night of indulgence huh??
But, no, for me its leftover pizza!
Your dinner looks fantastic though and great job taking a long walk
