Knee Help!
My last run was on Thursday, and after the run my knee was clicking. I tried to do lunges afterward but it was just so loud and annoying. I asked one of the gym trainers if I should be alarmed and he said that as long as it wasn’t painful (it wasn’t), sometimes our joints just click and it should be fine.
By Friday the clicking had gone away but my knee was not taking weight very well. There is still no pain, per se, but it is very uncomfortable and almost feels like there is air in there. It’s really hard to describe. It is uncomfortable without being painful.
This morning I noticed that it is slightly swollen and the place where I feel the discomfort feels spongy underneath. Again, no pain, but it is getting increasingly uncomfortable. Yesterday was a rest day. I didn’t go to the gym but I walked a lot around town and I think that may have aggravated it. Tomorrow I am supposed to go on a long run and I don’t know what to do. My 10k is in two weeks and I really want to be able to run it.
What should I do?! I can probably run tomorrow but I don’t want to make it worse. I’m already under-trained for this race as it is. Should I go see a doctor, or will this likely go away after a couple days? I don’t know anything about injuries so any suggestions on what this likely is would be helpful!
It’s only a slight swelling but on my other knee, that part goes in!

hi hun, so this uncomfortable feeling your describing…i get that exact feeling too! the way you described it with the feeling of air and the clicking…EXACTLY the same! except my knee doesnt swell and the feeling is only there sometimes. im afriad i dont know what advice to give you as ive been unsure wether to take a break or not due to this feeling, but i hope your knees are ok and that your able to do the 10k!
Sorry your knees not feeling so hot. : ( I really don’t have any advice. I’m not a runner and haven’t had to deal with things like this. Hope you find your solution!!!
I don’t have any expert advice for you, but whenever I get leg or foot pain after running, I ice immediately. Especially if something is swollen. I find it helps a lot. My knee also clicks all the time now because of running and spin class, but I haven’t experienced swelling or discomfort, so I’m not too sure. Check out Runner’s World, they have a lot of injury resources online!
Oh, Lara, I feel like I jinxed you! I hope it’s nothing serious. I’ve never experienced that. My knees usually seem okay with running. I would be hesistant to do a long run though.
I got that when I tried running… I ended up in physical therapy with major tendonitis… I’d say REST IT, don’t run, and wait til you feel better.
Sorry to hear about your knee
This is always my go to website:

Maybe they’ll have something there?
My knee pops when I do certain exercises like lunges or squats for example. It doesn’t hurt, but it’s quite annoying and I worry that someday it will bother me even more. I fell when I was skiing about 11 years ago and since then it’s been like that. Strange, eh? I really have no idea what it could be that you have. It’s good that you talked to the trainer at the gym about it. Maybe keep an eye on it.. and be smart, if your gut is telling you not to run on it, then don’t. Just be careful.
I wouldn’t run on it. I’d rest over the weekend and then if it still hurts Monday, I’d go see a doctor. I guess I just wouldn’t mess with your knees (or your back) when it comes to running. Too many important ligaments. You don’t want to blow out your knee and then REALLY be hurting.
Of course, two weeks ago, I would have just downed some Advil and gone for a run, but look where that got me…
You know what when my bf started running, his made some noise to but it was at the back on the knee instead of the front and hello he was not able to run for weeks he can walk and everything nothing hurt but if he tried to run he can’t do it. So I say don’t run or you will be pissed that you can’t do it for weeks later on.
Hey sweety, don’t go run on it and get an appointment with a sports fysio therapist asap. they’ll be able to check it out and tell you what’s up. Or your regular GP. Who knows, maybe it can easily be solved by some quick anti-swelling meds, but maybe it’s a sign of something else which you don’t want to aggravate.
I would definitely go see a doctor and get it checked out – give it a rest and don’t run on it until you know what’s wrong!
I definitely agree with the others who suggest resting your knee this weekend. If it is still bothering you on Monday, get it checked out by a doctor. You don’t want a minor discomfort to turn into something serious. If you don’t rest it now, it could prevent you from being able to run your 10k. I hope it improves over the next couple days!
Thanks, everyone! I’ve been icing it this evening and the swelling has already gone down. It got worse before it got better, but I am pleasantly surprised at how the ice has helped.
Thank you for all your suggestions!
I’d recommend seeing a doctor as well. Swelling on the outside is most often an indication of a meniscus tear or ligament injury. But I’m glad that it is getting better with the ice! Good luck to you.
Hey Lara,
So sorry about your knee. Not sure what is going on, but it it red at all? Does it feel warm? If so, there is inflammation. I would just ice and take another day off of running. Keep your leg elevated and try to stay off of it as much as possible. Oh, I just saw in your comment that ice already helped. Good news! Just keep taking it easy and listen to your body. Hope everything is okay soon!
P.S. The cherry Starburst were always my favorite too, and don’t even get me started on Kraft Mac & Cheese.
so sorry to hear about your knee! It probably wouldn’t hurt to go to the doctor — better safe than sorry, right?
Hope it feels better soon
So sorry about your knee, I would definitely agree with everybody else. It would never hurt to go the Doctor!
I’m sorry I won’t be of any help in this area, but i’m SURE with your popularity and of all the people who love your blog you’ll be sure to get some great answers.
My trick in putting in protein powder into steel-cut oats is mixing it in after I take the oats off the stove. I stir it for quite a bit till the lumps get out. I also don’t add as much protein powder as I like because i hate stirring out lumps. hahhahah Hoepfully this helps somewhat. Perhaps you can try mixing in half right after you take it off the stove, and half right before you eat it!
Get better soon my dear!!
i don’t know much about this stuff, but i’d say you’d rather be safe than sorry. rest your knee until it feels back to normal! you’ll end up doing more harm then good.
I would go to the doctor if I were you. Better safe than sorry. Also, I’m really paranoid
Hope it feels better!!
oh dear! everyone seems to be having knee problems these days! I don’t know how to advise you but if you really get concerned about it, I’d say go see a doctor!
I know nothing about running/knee pain but I hope you feel better soon!
The quorn ham is good- it doesn’t have the texture of meat (much softer/less “chewy”) but tastes great
i hate it when my knee clicks.. my doc said as long as it doesnt hurt its ok, but i agree… if its swollen.. rest it!!!!
RICE. Rest Ice Compression Elevation.
If it is clicking without pain that is different ( my cartiledge and joints click and crinkle all the time). If it is swollen though, that indicates inflamation which says something is torn/ sore/overused/out of place etc. It could be very minor or it could be serious, but it sounds pretty minor. So rest it, ice it for 20 minutes at most, use compression sleeves if you can to reduce swelling, and elevate it above heart level to get proper circulation so that it speeds healing.
Anti-inflammatory meds are fine and okay to use for this, but I would only use them if you are in discomfort or know that you have to be walking around alot … keeping inflammation down is crucial to speed healing AND prevent further injury.
After more than 2-3 days of using ice, alternate ice and heat to really get blood flow to the area.
hope this helps!
I wish I had some advice for you.
My knees, when running long distances, would start to hurt on the outer portion.
I started wearing a knee brace on one knee which helped a lot, then iced and took it easy after running.
I never had the clicking though, so sorry I’m not much of a help!
OUCH.
how is it now? Id imagine still puffy swollen?
Im really careful about things like that and, if RICE didnt help, would go to the dr STAT!
I’m with everyone else– rest it, ice it, you know the drill.
I hope you feel better soon! Those kinds of injuries are so annoying
Sorry to hear about your knee, you need rest. Please don’t exercise on it. Maybe try swimming if you want to keep going…?
Hi there! I happen to stop by your blog for the first time. If the popping is exactly where your pointer is pointing, it could be from your IT band being too tight. It can cause that ligament to tighten up and pop when you run. Your IT band is going to run down the side of your quad- best to look up a picture if you are not sure.
Also, look up myofascial release if you are not familiar with it and get a foam roller. Foam rolling your IT band and other leg muscles could really improve your run. It also takes care of any aches and pains. We tend to build up tight spots in our muscles!
Oh no! I have no idea how to help, but I’m really hoping that you get better!!
I’ve just recently injured my ankle and knee on my left side. I would definitely take this seriously especially if it’s swollen. You may want to ice 10 minutes on, 10 min off, 10 min on again every few hours throughout the day. If it continues, I would go see a chiropractor, just to make sure that you don’t do permanent damage.
ugh that sucks but trust me rest it as much as you can. My bf is one of those who refuse to rest and what happens no running for months!
My oh my, doused is definately the correct term! So much soy! But the dessert looks great – I’m not sure what that little chocolate-cake-resembling delight is, but I want a bite.
I really like egg white and laughing cow cheese together – I often put a wedge into my scrambled eggs or omelets. Such a great combination!
Your crack wrap looks positively delightful!
In answer to your question… a $300 hair straightener. I wouldn’t say its indulgent, but more a necessity. My old one broke and I can’t live without it!
I know this is a little late, but here is my insight to your knee,
It sounds to me like a meniscus tear, and from your picture it looks like it is your lateral one. You can live with a torn meniscus as long as it isn’t a ‘bucket handle’ tear or one that will prohibit the knee joints from fully flexing and extending. Keep up with everyone else’s advice of rest and ice, but also try and avoid exercise like lunges and squats which put excessive amounts of pressure and stress on your knee. Hopefully the swelling is better by now!
